The following is an official statement from Marvel Studios received Thursday, August 25, 2010 regarding the casting of an Asian American actress to portray the character Nico Minoru:

“To address your concern over casting for the role of Nico, as we do with all of our films, we intend to stay true to the legacy and story of the comic when casting these parts. Thus, our goal is to cast an Asian American actress as depicted in the comic series and the casting notice will be adjusted accordingly.

“We thank you again for your correspondence and the opportunity to clarify our process.

On the public open casting call website for Runaways, the breakdown revised on August 25th now reads:

Girl 1: Uniquely beautiful, nurturing but guarded
Female, Asian-American, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

The submission deadline for audition tapes has also been pushed back to September 15, 2010 to allow Asian American actors time to prepare their monologues.

The much anticipated film adaptation of Marvel Comics ‘Runaways’ is now in the pre-production stages and auditions for the project’s stars is underway.

Runaways is based on the award-winning comic book series published by Marvel Comics and created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The screenplay is being penned by Drew Pearce along with Brian K. Vaughan.

Peter Sollett will direct the big screen adaptation of Runaways. Sollett is best known for directing ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’ and has won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival among others.

Kevin Feige, President of Production at Marvel Studios, will serve as the film’s executive producer.

Casting Society of America Artios Award winning casting directors Randi Hiller and Sarah Finn are seeking boys and girls of a variety of ages to star in Runaways. Here are the roles they are casting:

Boys:

Boy 1: Very smart, natural leader, in need of a father figure
Male, African American, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

Boy 2: A rebel, ignores rules and authority, wounded inside
Male, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

Girls:

Girl 1: Uniquely beautiful, nurturing but guarded
Female, Asian-American, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

Girl 2: Chubby oddball, smart and verbal
Female, must play 16-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

Girl 3: Conventionally beautiful, with an unchecked ego
Female, must play 15-18
Must be at least 16 by January 2011

Girl 4: An innocent, wide-eyed and overprotected
Female, must play 8-10
Must be at least 9 by January 2011


Note:
The above link goes to an online auditions website titled ‘Small Faces’. The site will be updated soon to the ‘Runaways’ online auditions website. The casting directors originally wanted to keep the casting call discreet due to the popularity and huge interest in the film. Shooting will take place from January, 2011 through July, 2011. Please DO NOT submit if you are unavailable for this project. US residents only.

Do NOT send photos and resumes to the production companies (they will most likely end up in the trash can), they do not cast the films. They hire casting directors who sort through the thousands of submissions.
