Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company is in pre-production on the live-action 3D sci-fi adventure film “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Casting is underway for the main characters in the film in addition to co-starring and supporting roles, as well as voice-over actors for ADR (Additional Dialogue Recording) sessions. Casting calls have now been issued for talent in the UK to work as supporting artists, core extras, and stand-ins for the film’s starring actors. Shooting will commence in June, 2013 at Shepperton Studios and various locations around the UK.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” centers on U.S. fighter pilot Peter Quill, who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons Drax The Destroyer, a green warrior with the deadly purpose whose powers include enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands; a giant tree-man named Groot who can absorb wood as food, with the ability to rebuild himself and enhance his strength; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, an assassin and the last survivor of her species whose powers include superhuman strength and agility and an accelerated healing factor. These interstellar heroes have something everyone wants.

Starring in “Guardians of the Galaxy” is two-time Teen Choice Awards nominee Chris Pratt playing the role of U.S. fighter pilot Peter Quill, who becomes the interplanetary policeman Star-Lord. Pratt ended up being cast in the role instead of actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi, John Krasinski, and Michael Rosenbaum. Pratt recently completed shooting the DreamWorks film “The Delivery Man” starring opposite Cobie Smulders and Vince Vaughn. He is currently doing voice-over work on “Lego: The Piece of Resistance,” playing the character Emmet. WWE superstar Dave Bautista has been cast to play Drax the Destroyer. Independent Spirit Awards nominee Michael Rooker is playing the character Yondu.

Filmmaker James Gunn is directing “Guardians of the Galaxy” from a screenplay written by himself and Nicole Perlman, with rewrites by Chris McCoy. Gunn directed the 2010 film “Super” starring Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon. He previously wrote and co-directed the critically acclaimed independent film “Tromeo and Juliet”. Writer Nicole Perlman is a relative newcomer, and is a graduate of Marvel’s now-defunct writing program. Chris McCoy is also a screenwriting newcomer, however he has five screenplays lined up for production.

Marvel Studios SVP of Production and Development Jeremy Latcham, and Marvel Studios EVP of Visual Effects and Post Production Victoria Alonso will executive produce. Marvel Studios Co-President Kevin Feige will oversee production for the studio. Feige has been involved in all of Marvel Studios theatrical productions since the first X-Men film in 2000, and he will receive the Motion Picture Showman of the Year award at the ICG Publicists Guild Awards on February 22, 2013.
